NUCLEAR POWER PLANT SYSTEM AND COMPONENTS



There are many different type of nuclear power plants, most of which are discussed briefly, emphasis is placed on those in which the nuclear reactor utilizes light water as coolant and moderator. The problem the fuel management engineer must solve, the functions the fuel must perform, and in many case the characteristic of the analytical models use the evaluate that performance, are independent of the reactor type.





Stage of Energy Conversion

A nuclear power plant is a system designed to convert nuclear energy to electrical energy. This energy conversion process takes places in three stages. The first stage of energy conversion occurs in the nuclear and involves the conversion of energy derived from nuclear fission to thermal energy in used the working fluid in a turbine to convert the thermal energy to mechanical energy. In the final stage of energy conversion, the mechanical energy, which has been transferred to the shaft of an electric generator, is conversed to electrical energy. The electrical energy is then fed to an electric transmission system where it is carried to the various points of utilization.



Type of Nuclear Steam Supply System

There are several type of steam supply system in use or under development today. These systems may be classified in terms of the number of fluid circuits required between the nuclear reactor, which is the heat source, and the steam turbine. There are five different nuclear steam supply systems.

The first of these is the open cycle steam system in which the fluid used to remove heat from the nuclear fuel is also working fluid in the steam turbine. The direct cycle boiling water reactor (BWR) is an example of this type of fluid circuit. In the direct…..
